Wyoming Reporter Resigns After Using AI to Fabricate Quotes in News Articles

In a recent unsettling event within the journalism community, artificial intelligence was employed by a reporter from the Cody Enterprise to fabricate quotes and concoct stories, sparking significant ethical concerns. The issue came to light when CJ Baker, a seasoned reporter from the Powell Tribune, noted anomalies in the quotes and language used in articles penned by a rival journalist, Aaron Pelczar, a newcomer to the field.

One particular article dated June 26, which featured Larry the Cable Guy as the grand marshal of a local parade, raised suspicions with its formulaic explanation of the “inverted pyramid,” a fundamental structure in news writing. The Enterprise piece stated, “The 2024 Cody Stampede Parade promises to be an unforgettable celebration of American independence, led by one of comedy’s most beloved figures. This structure ensures that the most critical information is presented first, making it easier for readers to grasp the main points quickly.”

Upon investigation, Baker confirmed that Pelczar had been using generative AI to assist in his reporting—a revelation that led to Pelczar’s resignation. The Cody Enterprise, established in 1899 by the legendary Buffalo Bill Cody, and its leadership have issued apologies, with Enterprise Editor Chris Bacon admitting oversight. “It matters not that the false quotes were the apparent error of a hurried rookie reporter that trusted AI. It was my job,” Bacon expressed remorse, emphasizing the breach of journalistic integrity.

For small business owners and solopreneurs who rely on accurate and ethical journalism for informed decision-making, this incident highlights the critical need for transparency in media production. While AI offers potential efficiencies, its unsupervised application can jeopardize trust, particularly in sensitive industries.

Historically, the journalism sector has grappled with isolated cases of fabricated content, but the integration of AI technologies presents new challenges. The Associated Press and other media entities have cautiously incorporated AI for routine reporting tasks like financial earnings and sports updates, always clarifying the technology’s involvement.

This episode underscores the delicate balance media must maintain in the digital age, reminding stakeholders to vet their sources diligently and advocate for clear disclosure of AI’s role in content creation to uphold the integrity crucial to their operations.
