A prominent Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and research director was fatally shot Monday night in what authorities are investigating as a targeted attack at his Brookline residence.
Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in the foyer of his home at 9 Gibbs Street after Brookline police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:33 p.m. Monday. He was transported to Beth Israel Hospital for emergency surgery but succumbed to his injuries Tuesday morning.
Loureiro served as a faculty member in MIT’s departments of nuclear science & engineering and physics, and directed the university’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, a leading research facility focused on fusion energy and plasma physics.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the MIT community and the broader scientific establishment. In a statement, MIT officials expressed profound grief over the loss.
“Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving,” the university said, adding that it has initiated outreach efforts to provide support for those affected by the tragedy.
Brookline police have not released information about potential suspects or motives. The investigation remains active.
Loureiro’s death represents a significant loss to the fusion energy research community, where he was recognized as a leading authority in plasma science.
