Study Highlights Gaps in ChatGPT Usage for News Content Versus Creative Writing

A recent study by the Data Provenance Initiative, a consortium of independent and academic researchers focused on data transparency, has highlighted a significant mismatch between the training data of ChatGPT and its actual usage in real-world applications. The research examined over 14,000 web domains and found that although a substantial portion of ChatGPT’s training data comes from news articles, encyclopedias, and social media content, the tool is most frequently used for creative writing, brainstorming, and explanatory tasks.

The study reveals, “Whereas news websites comprise nearly 40% of all tokens… fewer than 1% of ChatGPT queries appear to be related to news or current affairs.” This disparity indicates that the performance of ChatGPT may vary when tasked with content creation that strays from its core data sources, such as current events or specialized industry topics.

Further insights from the research, which included analyzing the WildChat dataset containing 1 million user conversations with ChatGPT, show that more than 30% of these interactions involve creative activities like fiction writing or role-playing. This trend underscores a potential gap in expectations for small business owners and solopreneurs who might rely on the AI for content generation in areas less represented in its training.

For those leveraging ChatGPT in marketing and content development, understanding the foundation of its training can be crucial. To enhance the tool’s effectiveness, users are advised to provide detailed context, specify the desired tone and style, and simplify complex requests into more manageable tasks.

In the realm of AI-assisted content creation, ChatGPT can be a valuable asset for generating ideas for social posts or crafting catchy email subject lines. However, for content that requires up-to-date industry knowledge or deep specialization, the human touch remains indispensable.

To ensure quality and accuracy, it is recommended that all AI-generated content undergo thorough human review. This step is vital for maintaining brand consistency and adapting the material for specific communication channels.

For small business owners and solopreneurs navigating the evolving landscape of AI tools, these insights can guide the strategic use of ChatGPT, enhancing productivity without compromising the quality of content delivered to their audiences.

We typically get the short end of the stick…from big business, from crappy employers and from crappy governments. So what I’ve (and my esteemed and impeccably dressed cohorts) decided to do is call them out on it…and also give you solutions to start tilting the playing field in your favor.
